Making money online: A true story

It first occurred to me one day I came to a great need of money, while I was unable to find a real job. I was serving my military service for my country, and my girlfriend was making plans of her own. She wanted us to go for ski holidays as soon as I would be done. I was absolutely broke at the time, only had a few € my parents helped me sustain myself with while being in the army, and due to that, I also could not find a real job.

My first thought was “how am I going to be able to make some money without being able to leave my service?” that question lead only to the use of internet. I am saying this because you also may have a reason, or be in a similar situation for which you can’t get a steady job.

I remembered back in the day I was part of a fansubbing group (fansubs are translated and subtitled anime – Japanese animation – by people who do it for free) and we would provide those episodes through our website via Bittorent. Naturally, this is an item that has a big deal of audience so the traffic on our website was off the charts.

The website was being hosted by a friend for free, but eventually due to traffic we had to move on. The problem was that none of us wanted to put money from our own pocket since we were already providing our audience with our efforts and countless hours on working to release our next episodes. We also didn’t want to turn down to the usual paypal donations that usually occur for websites that run for free. It was then our own webmaster tipped us about using google’s adsense to have our website sort of self-sustained. We had no clue of what was coming.

Immediately then, I went to google’s adsense page, followed the procedure carefully, I must say google has done a great job explaining, and their marketing and advertising ideas are splendid. I was done only in a short few minutes, and after our website was approved, I got our java code installed, the adds worked great and google’s customizable format makes them blend in your content as if it were your own.

As any “make money online promise”, I didn’t expect much out of this, but I did expect it to give us a good 20-30 $ a month to keep our site going. To my surprise, 2 days later I was looking through the administrative pages google provides and I was surprised by the figures. 2 days and we had a 3 digit number due in. By the end of the first month, we reached a good 1.200.00 $. An amount far beyond what any of us had anticipated.

The later months to follow, things changed. Traffic on the website remained steady and increasing, the content was not changing tho, just a couple of links to new episodes were added every few days. Income slowly decreased to a steady 200 $ a month and remained at that.

I am now no longer in the group, I was back then, I don’t know what they are doing nowadays about that, but I do plan on using any possible means to get a bit of extra money on the side. Might not be much, but it is money google gives you the chance to have a share from!

Making money: Searching for Resources

Money is a very delicate subject thus making it a very powerfull word.Power in the case of the internet goes to the fact that it is one of the most frequent searches anyone might do online. Everyone wants money, and wants to know how to make it.This is being taken advantage of in a carefully thoughtof way...A website will use this fact by having that sort of content laid out. Google and any other crawler will run through it, and when users will go for a search along the lines of "money making" it will be neatly presented in front of them to go in.There are three cases from then on:
First case is that you enter a website that involves you signing up with a small ammount of 5-10$ so that you can enter and see money making solutions on how to be a billionaire just by doing a couple of clicks online. Well.. If you seriously think that you can do that, then why is that website charging fee? The answer is simple, the website is a trap for ignorant people who will pay that 5-10$ and get ripped off... by the time that website is closed, the owner might have made a good 5.000 $ + and be on with your money and you left with empty promisses.

Seccond case is that you enter a website packed with links and small bits of text on how to make money again. links pointing to other websites, pointing to other websites. Between all those links they are also hosting some ads and earn money off of there... You MIGHT get some information out of there, but you will end up reading the same things over and over again. They dont take your money but they still rely on your eagerness to find out if there is any easy way to make money for you to enter... all they care about is that ads are loaded on your browser and you also might click on them.

Third case is a website that still does use advertising within to make some possible proffit (it would be insanelly silly to let such traffic go to waste) But preserves an honest character, willing to actually provide some usefull information to visitors.

I am in favor of the third case, for the sole reason that honesty has the power to capture a visitor. Make him understand and gain some knowledge or conclusion from what he is going to read. Don't get me wrong, I like making money on the side from the ads, but at the same time I am happy I do so without feeling guilty of tricking anyone.

People reading through my blog, I would like you to leave your comments and links to your own blogs, and possibly discuss other means and ways on the topic.

The math behind the story

Adsense is an advertising engine that is flawless; it is you who has to put all it’s aspects to use.
I will not stay on the benefits of free to use, easy to setup, great support and the likes, I will try to talk about the elements that you must take advantage to make the most of it.

TRAFFIC
The first and most crucial bit in this story is website traffic. It is not easy and not many people will succeed in achieving about xxxx visits a day for their website. It is only natural that it’s always a percentage of that xxxx who will actually click on the ad, so numbers increase in that sense. It will take an incredible amount of work, or an extremely fresh idea to gain those figures in traffic. We will get to that later on.

RELEVANCE
Second thing is that the add needs to be something the visitor is interested in. Google achieves that the moment the visitor enters your website, you don’t need to pick something relevant, it has already been done when adsense read through your content and brought in the appropriate ads for you!
In some cases there is an unavoidable downfall to that which I will explain by referring to my story again. We did have a broad audience and a vast traffic. But what sort of ads were we getting? The Anime and Manga industry is big, but the product itself is not that expensive, therefore the ads benefit behind it will follow the same pattern. Bottom line is you can’t expect to earn big $$ by advertising lollypops to XXX amount of people when you could be advertising, say cars to the same XXX amount of people. But facts: this is not adsense’s problem, it has already maximized your chances visitors click on the ads for you by making them most relevant to your website.

VARIETY / CHANGE
I will stand again on the fact that the website I was dealing with had a solid structure, fixed text and had no new content from the day it was first made. The changes would be that new links would be made for new episode releases from our group. That causes a consistency on the adds adsense brings in and most probably you soon run out of visitor – add chance to click, people already saw that yesterday, may or may not have clicked it. If it doesn’t change, you are going nowhere. Guess what has to be done here!
